A Husband and a Wife may share a single space in your city, so together they take up only 1 of your 15 spaces; each pairs with only one. Pairing is optional, but it happens when you play the second card: you can't pair them later, and a pair can't be split. A paired Wife is worth 3 more points, and a paired Husband gives you 1 resource of your choice when played and at each Production if you have a Farm. Newer printings call them the Harvester and Gatherer, with the same rules.
