An optional variant adds limited Advanced Technologies: Thermocompressor (1 Locomotive: claim 2 routes this turn, then return it), Water Tenders (2: draw 3 blind cards instead of 2), Diesel Power (3: play 1 card fewer than required, at least 1, never skipping a ferry's Locomotive). Risky Contracts (2: +20 for the most completed tickets, otherwise −20) and Equalising Beam (2: +15 for the longest route, otherwise −15) must be bought before the Train deck is first reshuffled; after that they go back in the box.
