How to play Ticket to Ride: Europe
Setup
- Board: place the board in the middle of the table.
- Each player takes 45 trains and 3 Train Stations in one colour (Brown, Red, Purple, Gray or Blue), and puts their scoring marker on Start (0) on the scoring track.
- Train Car cards: shuffle them and deal 4 to each player. Put the rest face down next to the board as the draw deck, then turn its top 5 cards face up beside it.
- Three Locomotives showing? If 3 of those 5 face-up cards are Locomotives, discard all 5 and turn up 5 new ones.
- Bonus card: place the European Express bonus card face up next to the board.
- Long Tickets: separate the 6 Long Destination Tickets from the 40 Regular ones. Shuffle the Long Tickets, deal 1 to each player, and return the rest to the box unseen.
- Regular Tickets: shuffle them, deal 3 to each player, and put the rest face down next to the board as the ticket draw pile.
- Choose tickets: from your 4 (1 Long + 3 Regular), keep at least 2. You may keep more, and you may discard the Long Ticket. Discarded tickets go back in the box, unseen.
- Whoever's traveled to the most European countries goes first; play then passes clockwise.
Your Turn
Take exactly one of these 4 actions. You can't pass.
- Draw Train Car cards: take 2, from the 5 face-up cards or the top of the deck. A face-up Locomotive has its own limit.
- Claim a route: play cards matching its colour, one per space, then place your trains and score it straight away.
- Draw Destination Tickets: draw 3 Regular Tickets and keep at least 1.
- Build a Train Station on any city without one, for 1 card, then 2, then 3 of one colour.
Routes
- Gray routes take a set of any one colour.
- Locomotives are wild in any set.
- Ferries need a Locomotive card for each Locomotive icon.
- Tunnels: flip 3 cards from the deck and pay 1 extra card per match, or take your cards back.
- Double routes: you can never claim both of a pair; with 2–3 players, the other one closes.
Scoring
- Route scoring: 1, 2, 4, 7, 15 or 21 points for a route of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 or 8 spaces, scored when you claim it.
- Destination Ticket scoring: at game end, add a ticket's value if your routes connect its two cities, or subtract it if not.
- Train Stations: each one you built lets you use one opponent's route into its city for your tickets. Each unused Station scores 4.
- European Express: +10 at game end for the longest continuous chain of your trains.
Example: A 4-space route scores 7 at once. An unfinished 20-point Long Ticket costs 20 at game end.
Game End & Winning
- Game end: once a player finishes a turn with 2 or fewer trains, everyone gets one last turn.
- Final scoring: choose each Station's route, score your tickets and unused Stations, then the European Express.
- Winner: most points. The tie-breaker is most tickets completed, then fewest Stations used, then whoever holds the European Express card.
Expansion rules
Only needed if you play with the expansion named on each heading.

- Setup: choose a ticket variant. Europe Expanded: add the 19 new 1912 Regular tickets to the Regular tickets and deal as usual. Big Cities of Europe, Mega Europe or Europe 1912 (anniversary box): deal tickets as its card says instead of the Long and Regular steps.
- Setup: with Warehouses & Depots, after tickets are kept each player takes a Warehouse and 5 Depots, keeps 4 Depots beside the Warehouse, and, starting with the last player and going counterclockwise, places the 5th Depot in any city.
- Warehouses & Depots: feed a card into a Warehouse before drawing; spend a Depot to empty a Warehouse when you claim into a Depot city; 10 points for the most unused Depots.
Bonus tickets Bonus tickets
- Setup: before dealing, shuffle any of the 7 bonus tickets (Orient Express, Max) into the Regular tickets (or the variant's ticket deck).
